Everyone is doing it. Ok, lots of people do this and it’s not a terrible exercise in reflection. So, here are the year-end lists I get asked about or I get curious about.

Most Impactful Books

I say ‘impactful’ because I read around 2 books a week, which makes a condensed list daunting. What this means is that for a book to make this list, I needed it to stick in my head and remain there a while–in other words, it needs to make some kind of lasting impression. They are as follow (in no particular order):

1. Essentialism by Greg McKeown–timing is perfect on this book and it’s full of quotable mantras such as “trading in the trivial many for the vital few”

2. Daring Greatly by Brene Brown–see my brief reflection posted on September 17

3. Brilliance by Marcus Sakey (followed by A Better World by same author…great new fiction series)….see summaries here: http://marcussakey.com/

4. ‘Charis’ by Preston Sprinkle–the Scandal of Grace….important words here.

5. ‘Renaissance’ by Os Guinness–a mentor of sorts over the years…one to re-read.

6. Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson–hands down one of the most important books on justice I have ever read; highly recommended

honorable mention: I listened to the audio book of Love Does by Bob Goff with my children on a trip and everyone in the car was engaged, interested, and inspired…which is no small thing.

End of Year Playlist

Here’s the current playlist I am listening to….three years ago I lamented the break up of REM and listed some songs…at year’s end, this should be interesting to note…

1. ‘Riptide’ by Vance Joy

2. ‘Nights and Weekends’ by Cold War Kids

3. ‘On My Way’ by Distant Cousins

4. ‘A Rush and a Push and the Land is Ours’ by the Smiths

5. ‘Break Your Plans’ by the Fray

6. ‘Ink’ by Coldplay

7. ‘You Can See Everything’ by Matt Pond

8. ‘The Edge of the Earth’ by Switchfoot

9. ‘River’ by All Delighted People

10. ‘Letting Go’ by Saint Raymond

If you have any book or song suggestions, please list them below or tweet them to me @bomwhite

Cheers to a new year.
